Socratic Seminars

One of our specialised fields in education as well as in leadership and group development is Socratic seminars. The Socratic seminars are a way in which to work with developing childrens’, teenagers’ and adults’ thinking, speech and social and intellectual competence. The seminars are based on Socrate’s maieutics, mid-wifery, where ideas, values and dilemmas are explored. The Socratic seminars as a educational activity has its origin within both university- and general educational tradition and is today a method which can be used from nursery school to university within all subjects and also within leader instruction. Ann S Pihlgren’s doctor’s dissertation Socrates In The Classroom examined the practice of Socratic seminars and it’s effects. She has also made further publications within the subject, see the Book Shop. You can read more in our Library. More essays about Socratic seminars can be found on www.mimer.org beneath organisation/our works of development.
